Why I Switched My Cosmetics to Cruelty-free Ones

Today I want to talk about something that is kind of dear to my heart, but also something I've avoided talking about because of controversy. The obvious disclaimer here is that I don't mean to point a finger or make you feel bad about your choices, absolutely no one needs to do things my way. This is just my way of viewing things and what makes me feel good. You do you girl.

I've been pushing to cruelty-free makeup collection for little over a year now. I started at the end of 2016, when I started growing interest into doing something better with my makeup. I used to buy any makeup that happened to fit into my price range, without thinking about anything else. If I liked it, I bought it. Then I watched some plant-based youtubers and cruelty-free ones as well, and something inside me clicked. Since it is just makeup, why should it involve another living being in the making? Should someone suffer in order to me to paint my face?

To me, testing on animals is kind of a dated thing. Something that should already be in the past. We have the ways to test makeup, and most things without slapping them on animals. I do understand arguments on testing things on animals rather than humans, but nevertheless the practice feels out of place for me. So since getting into that mindset, I stopped buying makeup products that are tested on animals. I try to do my research the best that I can before getting into new brands, and I must say that cruelty-free beauty blogs have been a great help.

I also decided that once the makeup part of my beauty routine stays easily cruelty free, I will start switching the rest. As you may know from my bucket list, I did make it this year's mission to search for cruelty-free alternatives for hair and skin. For this, I will again scout the internet and beauty blogs so I can find the best options for me. Sometimes finding products seems a little difficult here in Finland, because our market is small and being cruelty-free isn't too trendy so far (you may correct me if I'm wrong on this). I think none of my real life friends are as into this as I am, so I think majority of people over all don't think this aspect too much. Which I understand, to many it's more important how the products work, do they make them break out, if your friends recommend it etc. All of which are my interests as well, but personally I couldn't proudly post makeup looks while knowing things happening in the process of making the products. However I don't actually care what is on someone else's face, I can only control my own personal choices and try to recommend my favorite brands to everyone. It's up to them if they like those or not.

My ultimate favorite brand has been NYX Cosmetics, they only quite recently (I think it was 2016) started selling in shelves here which was part of the reason for the makeup trasition I did. I had the affordable brand to try out, so many of my favorite influencers loved their stuff and I kept seeing lots of NYX everywhere. I've found staple pieces I use daily from them, and switching to NYX was a gateway for me properly starting to research other brands I could try. Many of course are a bit pricy, but there are affordable ones like E.L.F. My recent brand to try is Finnish brand called Lumene. I've used them in my teen years but stopped because I got more excited about more affordable brands. But this week, I bought two items from them since they were in sale and also because

NYX Fly With Me Mascara

One thing to note about the progress of me choosing my makeup is that at this point I don't have the energy or interest to go as far as to take notice if the parent companies are absolutely cruelty-free, and have bought products that have been sold with words "the ready products are not tested on animals". I know for some that's not cruelty-free enough, and I'd say I prefer products that come so that not even the ingredients are tested on animals. But I do this mostly for myself - and of course for the animals - so I don't really underline it too much, I don't need any validation for this, but in case anyone would ever wonder why I don't buy certain brands or so on. Very probably the reason is that the brand is not cruelty-free.
In case you are interested in cruelty-free beauty, I recommend that you check out Cruelty Free Kitty. It's the website I get most of my information from because the site gets updated regularly enough on which companies/brands are cruelty-free each year. They also have many reviews of the products and the aesthetic of the site is really beautiful as well. As for YouTubers, I'd name for example Kristen Leanne, Evelina Forsell and Kalel. All of them are cruelty-free, and at least Kalel also vegan, so if cruelty-free or plant-based lifestyle is your choice, they might be helpful to you.

What are your favorite cosmetic brands (cruelty-free or not)? Let me know in the comments below so I can check them out!

That's all for today's post - which ended up being quite long - and I really hope you had the time and interest to read through this. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts about this topic, whether you would make the same choices or not. I will post next time on the weekend, not sure yet what we will talk about then but stay tuned for it anyway. And as usual, in the meantime you can follow me on Instagram (@silvertigo) for daily outfits and more.
Have a wonderful day ♥

  1. Hei, kannattaa tsekata lookfantastic.com ! Ite käytän Sukin merkkiä nassun hoitoon ja toimii mulla ainaki tosi hyvin! hiuksiin käytän Pureologyä (aika kallis mutta tosi hyvä!) molemmat merkit on vegaanisiä eikä niissä muutenkaan oo mitään ylimäärästä.

  2. This is such a good move to make - I've wanted to do the same as well, but it's always so hard to find information from brands whether they test on animals or not.
I'm a huge fan of NYX, so I'm glad they're cruelty free.

    1. I completely understand, sometimes it takes work to get the info. But like mentioned in the post, I recommend checking out Cruelty Free Kitty. They have lists of brands that are cruelty free and those have helped me out so far. :) I try to make helpful posts on cruelty free brands/products in the future ♥
